Dustin was born in San Diego California, and has lived in Colorado for most of his adult life. After receiving his BFA at Colorado State University for Fiber Arts, Dustin went to work at Interweave Press in Loveland Colorado. He is currently the Senior Editor of Beadwork Magazine, and writes the Beadboy and Sead Beads columns.
In his own words:
“It seems I've been beading ever since I sewed sequins on the scrap of fabric that I wore as a cape when playing in the box canyon behind our house in rural Colorado. A rarity these days, I'm one of those lucky people with a grandmother that knew how to use a sewing machine. She also taught me oil-painting, and my parents always encouraged my artwork. In the absence of an art program in the public school system, local artists generously guided me, for which I am forever grateful and hope to repay someday.
While at Colorado State University, I reluctantly tried the Fibers sector of the art building. Strange that my love of sewing was closeted, thinking that I wanted to learn the "fine art" of painting. The world of textiles is filled with archetypes, of which I was shown the route I sought and immediately embarked upon.
Beading in earnest began with a need for a portable medium, as I shared my time with family care giving and traveling the world. Suddenly I became Bead Boy, writing a column for Beadwork magazine, and soon thereafter becoming an editor of beading projects and articles. Please enjoy the material on my website and let it inspire you to learn more about the art of Beading!”
